Xmas Jumper Facts

Despite there only being 66 million people living in the UK, over 65 million Christmas jumpers have been bought. In 2019, 12 million more jumpers were expected to be sold. How can there be more jumpers than people?

Christmas Jumpers is an extreme example of fast fashion; 2 out of 5 jumpers will only be worn once. 1 in 3 people will buy a new jumper every year. 1 in 4 of those will be thrown away.

Tens of thousands of schools and businesses across the UK take part in the ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ with Save the Children. The increased demand for Christmas jumpers means quicker turnovers therefore are being seen more as disposable. That means more possible sweatshop labour, and animal exploitation.

In a study done by charity ‘Hubbub’, 108 Christmas jumpers from 11 different stores were examined and it was found that 95% were wholly or partly made from plastic. In a survey of over 3000 adults, Hubbub found that only 29% of the adults knew there was plastic in the jumpers. Plastic is non-biodegradable and uses fossil fuels to be produced, consequently creating a further environmental problem.

Christmas jumpers owned and bought in 2016 alone has been estimated to have had an environmental impact equivalent to more than 500,000 bathtubs of water and used enough carbon dioxide to fill 179 balloons for every person in the UK.
